Good data and good story-telling are essential parts of successful advocacy; good data provides evidence and strong narratives organize the meaning behind the data. The Massachusetts Food System Collaborative has built a track record of bringing together food system advocates and legislators to increase public investment in our local food system.
Much of this success rests on three pillars:

Strong relationships and networks within the food system and the legislature;

Real-time guidance to advocates on how to engage effectively in the legislative process;

The Massachusetts Local Food Action Plan, which has served as a common point of reference
This new project seeks to build on that foundation by increasing the capacity of our networks, advocates from across the state, and the legislature to understand both the strengths and the limitations of our local food system, as well as the impacts of public and private investments of time and money.
By developing more strategic, better-organized data, and pairing it with compelling narratives, the Collaborative will enhance its ability to compete for the attention and action of state government.
Further, by creating a central hub where both data and stories live side by side, we will strengthen the ability of our networks to align around shared information. This shared foundation will enable advocates, organizations, and legislators to set common goals and coordinate strategies more effectively.
